Russel Simmons, co-founder of Def Jam Records and otherwise known as the godfather of hip-hop, launched Baby Phat, in 1999, after his Phat Farm designer men's clothing line started to slump. Simmons had married Kimora Lee, an ex-model just the year prior and recognizing his new bride's marketing potential "multiethnic woman", an image that would promote a new line of women's and kid's clothing to a hipper audience of teens and urban young women.
Under Kimora Lee's influence Baby Phat took fashion shows to the level of multi-billion dollar rock concerts. Baby Phat in turn, gave new life to the entire Phat family with it's stealthy rhinestone cat trademark logo, which appears on all Baby Phat jeans, t-shirts, handbags etc.
Kimora Lee Simmons was no newcomer to the fashion industry. At age fifteen, Kimora was a fashion model and muse to Chanel impresario, Karl Lagerfeld, before becoming an internationally renowned fashionista and the President and Creative Director for Baby Phat, Inc. Today Kimora's Baby Phat markets everything from clothing and handbags to her Diamond Diva Jewelry and designer Motorola cell phones with the Baby Phat trademark logo.
Kimora has since made the transition from runway, to multi-billion dollar fashion icon, to television, to host on MTV's Fashionably Loud and on MetroChannels' Full Frontal Fashion, and as a judge on America's Next Top Model. But Kimora's close-ups aren't limited to Baby Phat billboards and television appearances. In 2004, Hip-Hop's Fashionista got busted in New Jersey for failure to pull over for a police officer, possession of marijuana and several other minor offenses, including a busted taillight and reckless driving.
In 2004, Phat Fashions and its brands Phat Farm and Baby Phat were acquired by Kellwood Industries for $140 million dollars. The brands were welcomed into a family of brands, which include popular names such as Nautica, XOXO, Sag Harbor and Ralph Lauren. In the deal with Kellwood, Russel Simmons still remains Chief Executive of Phat Fashions and Kimora Lee Simmons continues as creative director of Baby Phat.
