Christian Dior Handbags

Christian Dior was born in Normandy, France, in 1905. Although he displayed great talent in art, design, and fashion Christian Dior pursued an education in political science. Following college, Dior was enlisted by the French army.

Post war 1938, Dior was hired by renowned designer, Robert Piguet, to design a line of full-length dresses. However, Germany's invasion of France during WWII turned Dior's life upside down once again when he was dispatched to protect France's southern border. Nearly a year later, Dior returned to Paris where he was hired by Lucien Lelong's design house for the next five years.

In 1946, Dior requested financial backing from a wealthy textile industrialist named Marcel Boussac and thus the House of Dior was born. Dior's first radical, women's clothing "New Look" with its cinched waists, full-length skirts, rounded shoulders, and bold fabrics re-instituted war-torn France in it's rightful place as the capital of world fashion.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Dior creations were donned by female celebrities like Lucille Ball, Harriet Nelson and Jacqueline Kennedy. Before his death, in 1957, Dior mentored a young assistant named Yves Saint Laurent and new product lines consisting of handbags, socks, perfumes, furs and ties were inspired by their collaboration. Yves Saint Laurent took leadership of the House of Dior upon his mentor's passing, but was commissioned for military service in 1960.

Today, despite economical and political strife, Christian Dior is still said to be the most recognized name in fashion. The House of Dior currently operates under the name Christian Dior Couture and is headed by Bernaud Arnault.
