Judith Leiber Handbags

Judith Leiber is in a category all her own when it comes to handbags. The elegance, the style, the sophistication of her purses far surpasses all others. Her ornately beaded bags are completely unique, completely inspired and absolutely the pinnacle in luxurious accessories.

Born in Hungary in 1921, Judith Leiber, nee Peto, escaped the Holocaust of World War II to the safety of Switzerland. After the war, Judith came home to Budapest, where she designed and made handbags from her house.

The first woman ever appointed to the handbag-makers guild in Budapest, she began making handbags at a friend's small factory. In 1948, Judith Peto became Judith Leiber, when she met and married an American soldier. She immigrated to the Unites States and worked as a handbag designer for different handbags manufacturers.

In 1963, Leiber was able to found her own business, where she began building her name and reputation for sophisticated cutting edge fashion and luxurious style. In her career, Judith Leiber's ornate purses have been sold at exclusive boutiques, placed in museums as objects d'art and carried by some of the most prominent women in the world including First Ladies Barbara Bush and Hillary Clinton, not to mention fashion icons Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicole Kidman.

In 1994, at the age of 78, Judith Leiber received a lifetime achievement award from the Council of Fashion Designers. Her handmade work has been so influential in the fashion world that her work can be seen on permanent display at several world famous museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The Judith Leiber minaudiere, also known as the bejewelled and sparkling bag that Leiber is so famous for designing and hand-making, came about quite by accident. When a shipment of metal frames arrived from Italy tarnished, Leiber affixed thousands of tiny beads to them to cover up the tarnish. A fashion legend was born. Ornate, flamboyant and synonymous with opulence, Judith Leiber purses are the apex of arm candy.

Nocturnal Bloom Minaudiere - The design and style for which Leiber is so well known is exemplified perfectly in this barrel shaped, crystal encrusted purse. Ornate, shimmering with detail and deliciously decorated, the Nocturnal Bloom minaudiere is absolutely classic Judith Leiber.

Astor Collection "Madeleine" - The Judith Leiber day collection is luxurious and sophisticated without the sparkle of the signature Leiber beads. The Astor collection is fashioned from alligator, with simple, classic forms and interesting but classic shades. The Madeleine in Goldenrod is absolutely gorgeous; simple styling allows for the silver closure to sport the monogram "JL", the sole embellishment on this classic purse.

Astor Collection "Caroline" - The Caroline design is a larger purse than the Madeleine, but similar in its simplicity. The simple alligator purse with hand strap feature and silver closure with "JL" monogram is classic and classy. Effortlessly elegant and very much a go-anywhere accessory, this Leiber purse is classic, feminine and sophisticated.

I have a vintage Judith Leiber purse from my mother-in-law, who passed away last year. It's a large (probably snake) bag and I'm trying to sell it. It's probably late 40's early 50's, although I don't know for sure. I know she had it for a very long time and she died at 95. M
