Liz Claiborne Inc. was established, in 1976, by its namesake designer, Liz Claiborne and her three business partners - Art Ortenberg, Leonard Boxer and Jerome Chazen. The Liz Claiborne brand name has never appealed to hip and cool fashion whims of teens and woman under 25, instead it's famous for chic, yet classic, women's handbags and career wear.
Because of Liz Claiborne's professional-women niche, sales dropped thought the 1980s and into the early 90s, until new chief executive, Paul Charron, decided to add new brand names to the Claiborne family - including Kenneth Cole, DKNY Jeans, City DKNY, Mexx and Juicy Couture to appeal to the younger sect; brands like Dana Buchman and Singrid Olsen for professional-types; and Villager and Crazy Horse for budget shoppers.
