The prominent brand name Tommy Hilfiger draws to mind the quintessential image of what it is to be all-American.
The man behind the company, Tommy Hilfiger, was just that, a hard-working entrepreneur who began selling bell-bottom jeans while still in high school at just 18-years-old. Hilfiger opened a store with just $150 and 20 pairs of jeans. His store "The People's Place," located in upstate New York, would sell bell-bottom pants from New York City - a hot-in-demand clothing item in his area. However, Hilfiger wasn't about to let financial ruin stop him from his dream career in fashion design. Turning down jobs with big names like Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein, for the bigger piece of pie, Tommy Hilfiger Inc. was founded in 1984. Hilfiger's first menswear collection was revealed that same year consisting of no-nonsense button-down shirts, classic chinos and time-honored corduroy pants. Eventually, Tommy Hilfiger Inc. would add full signature mens, womens, kids, fragrances, handbags and belts and home accessories designer lines.
Even though Tommy Hilfiger claimed that his clothing and products were "for the people," the company name was smeared by rumors, in the 1990's, accusing Hilfiger of uttering racial slurs. Once again, Tommy Hilfiger, the man and the company persevered. Today, Tommy Hilfiger clothing, handbags, shoes and accessories are worn by all walks of life - from professional bankers to rap artists.
Tommy Hilfiger has featured fresh musical artists like Britney Spears and up-and-coming models such as Rebecca Romijn and Giselle Bundchen; as well as time-honored celebrities such as the Rolling Stones and David Bowie in their add campaigns.
