Buying a Backpack

Choosing a proper fitting designer backpack will go a long way in making your backpacking trip more comfortable and convenient. Students should also take some care when choosing a backpack that is both comfortable and provides the proper amount of storage space for all of their school materials. Choosing a proper fitting backpack will depend on many factors such as your sex, size, travel needs as well as the conditions you will be traveling in.

Consider the following factors when purchasing a backpack for travel or for school:

Backpack Usage - is it for school books, for your gym clothes and equipment or for a backpacking trip through Europe? What you put in your backpack will determine the size, shape and storage space you require.

Backpack Size - If you intend to use your backpack for short hikes, as an overnight bag or as a tote to the gym a small backpack will do the trick. Whereas if you want a backpack for heavy school books or lengthy hikes over rough terrain you will want a larger pack. The trick is to choose a backpack that will carry all of your gear, but not be too heavy.

Backpack Shape - Backpacks are manufactured with internal and external frames. External framed backpacks allow for better ventilation, easier access to backpack contents and are generally lower in price. Internal framed backpacks offer more padding, heavier carrying capacity and transfer weight from your back to your hips.

Backpack Weight - Before purchasing a backpack be sure to try it on in the store to see if it's comfortable. Different backpacks suit different body types, so ask the salesperson to help you choose a pack that's right for your body type. Once you're home - and before removing the tags - fill the pack and try it on again to test if the weight is manageable.

Backpack Sex - Yes, you read that right - many backpacks are designed specifically for the female body type. Women should look for a short backpack with a slimmer design between their waist and shoulders and a wider bottom near their hips. This is because women tend to transfer most of they carry to their hips. Men on the other hand carry the majority of backpack weight with their shoulders and back.

Backpack Durability - If you're taking your backpack hiking across Europe you will want the pack to last the entire trip. Before buying a pack inspect the craftsmanship of the zippers and fasteners (metal or plastic), stitching, straps, contouring and materials. If you're camping outdoors, be sure to buy a weatherproof backpack to ensure that your clothes and food stay dry and clean.

Backpack Price - A quality made, comfortable backpack will make heavy loads manageable, will be durable, will transport all your gear and keep it dry, and it will allow adequate circulation and proper back support. However, be prepared to pay between $100 and $500 for a quality backpack.
