Pierre Cardin, an Italian-born French fashion designer, was the pioneer of ready-to-wear in the late 1940's. Cardin was the first to change stuffy menswear to casual and comfortable business attire. The company that bears his name took his fashion ideas to Europe and Eastern Asia after WWII. At this time the world was ready to reinvent the term "stylish." Through Cardin's diverse designs - including luxury clothing, handbags, luggage, furniture, wines, stationary and toiletries – stylish and functional is exactly what they got.
Pierre Cardin was born in 1922, in Italy. After training as a tailor, Cardin worked for two famed design houses in Paris in his early 20s. Eventually, Cardin found himself nestled into the Dior fashion house, in charge of designs for the label's New Look. Cardin is likely best known, outside of fashion circles, for the stunning costumes that he designed for Beauty and the Beast in 1946.
In 1950 Cardin made a life-altering career move. He quit his job at Dior and opened his own menswear boutique. Thanks to his extraordinary fashion vision, the first ready-to-wear line was introduced to the public in the early 1960's. Cardin's dramatic astronaut suits and metal jewelry had a futuristic flare that were more like works of art than clothing.
