Coin Purses

Coin purses first emerged in the 11th century when European men carried small leather pouches, which they referred to as "almoniers". These coin purses were approximately two inches square, were clasped together with leather thongs and were worn suspended from a belt, along with a sword or knife.

From their earliest existence coin purses served as a status symbol and they were often carried through the marketplace and opened to either buy wares or dispense coins to the needy. In the 14th century, woman began to demand their stake of the purse strings and coin purses became a fashion accessory for both sexes. Coin purses at this time were elaborately decorated or embroidered purses made of silver or gold thread and were worn on long cords or straps dangling almost to the ankles.

Today, coin purses are less a status symbol, although eye-catching woven textiles, leather, PVC plastic, metallic, metal clasps and even novelty cartoon characters still go into their design. Coin purses range from $2 to $100, depending on the materials they're made of, for example coin purses made with real leather are pricy compared to those made of vinyl. Popular coin purse styles include the following:

Zip Coin Purses - small pouches made out of a variety of materials such as leather, PVC plastic, cotton, linen and faux fur with zippers running around the top.

Snap Coin Purses - small pouches with either a button snap closure or a two-pronged metal closure at the top.

Velcro Coin Purses - generally made of vinyl, faux leather or PVC plastic with a strip of Velcro keeping it closed. Velcro wallets often feature novelty cartoon characters and are perfect for children because they are durable.

Squeeze Coin Purses - generally made of PVC plastic with two stiff pieces of plastic that can be squeezed apart to allow access into the coin purse.
