Kids have a lot of stuff. Toys, games, books, hockey equipment – you name it, kids need to carry it around. Bag companies have catered to this need with a variety of children’s bags suited for every purpose. Many luggage and clothing makers, such as Samsonite, Timberland, Disney and Hurley, make a variety of bags just for kids.
In the old days, kids took their books to school secured with nothing but a leather strap, but today they tote all they need in book bags. The hottest bags can hold everything, including notebooks, pencil cases, library books, lunch bags and gym clothes, usually in an organized fashion. They also double as kids travel bags for short trips.
When shopping for a book bag for your child, there are a few things to look for. Make sure that the bag is not too large for your child. Choose a pack with comfortable, well-padded shoulder straps. Many older students should have a waist strap to help distribute a heavy load.
Save your money on book bags for young children. Not only are they going to grow out of the backpack’s size and design (Barney is only cool for so long) young children are more likely to break their book bags and dirty them up. Once your child has stopped growing, consider investing in a tougher pack that will last longer.
Finally, let your child choose who or what is on the bag, and the color. Book bag popularity for young children usually revolves around which cartoon character is their favorite, be it Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, Dora the Explorer or a Disney princess. Older children are more concerned about the color and style of the bag. Messenger-style bags are popular among teens, as are large handbags that double as a book bag for girls.
Many children bring their lunches or snacks to school every day. Rather than using disposable plastic or paper bags, a re-usable lunch bag is a smart investment. An insulated bag allows you to send many food items that normally need to be refrigerated, such as yogurt, fruit or cold meats. Just throw in a re-usable ice pack and your child’s food will stay fresh until lunchtime. Choose a lunch bag with one or two zippered compartments and a leak-proof liner. Extra pockets with zippers on the outside of the bag are handy for holding lunch money and cutlery separately from food.
Sometimes it’s a challenge keeping lunch bags and book bags kids safe. Write your child’s name inside the bag in permanent marker, rather than outside where a stranger could call out your child’s name. Check that the straps fit well, and send them off to school!
