Sequin Purses and Handbags

We gals love shiny things (with fancy price tags). Diamonds are a girl’s best friend; unfortunately they’re a little pricey. Gemstones, rhinestones and sequins, on the other hand, are equally attractive at a fraction of the cost. Compared to the others, sequins are the most common (and inexpensive) material used to add sparkle to clothing and accessories. Sequined purses can save you big bucks on formal occasions, if you’ve already spent too much on that fabulous outfit or shoes.

In late 1960’s, fashion designers were inspired by jewelry and started adding cup sequins and circular spangles to their clothing. Cup sequins are disk-shaped with holes in the centre; while circular spangles have one hole at the edge that is used to attach the sequin to the fabric. Both types do their part to create a wavy reflection of light, when the purse is swung over a woman’s shoulder.

Charming evening purses, the most popular sequined purses, are adorned with a variety of shaped sequins - long slender sequins or leaf-shaped sequins are sometimes used instead of round ones. When the slim or leaf-shaped sequins are used to cover an entire purse, the random pattern creates a fluffy, yet shimmering illusion and calls to mind the flappers of the 1940’s. Longer sequins also create a rustling sound as the purse swings from your shoulder.

Sequin handbags are ideal for a night out to the theater or night club – if it’s sequined it’s sure to draw attention. Patterned sequin clutches, embroidered with matching beads, are an attractive combination when teamed with a basic black elegant evening dress.

The clothing you wear needs to be considered before you decide to pair it with a sequined handbag. For instance, a sequin handbag can be a real annoyance if you match them with crochet, silk or leather materials, as sequins are easily caught up in porous fabrics. It would be sad to see a pull in a beautifully crocheted sweater courtesy of your favorite sequined purse.

Sequin purses are generally affordable, for less than $80 online.
